| Description | Believe it or not, the cost of caring for a hospitalized patient on the island of La Gonave is just $15 per day. This covers the costs of staffing, IV fluids, medications, bandages, etc. (compare this to the average cost of hospitalizaton in the U.S.: $2,500/day, $17,500 per week!). Problem is, most people on the island are desperately poor and can come nowhere near affording even $15 per day. Knowing this, many desperately ill and injured people never seek care in the first place... even if they know it might save their lives. |
